Ezra & Gil: Classic Breakfast Review

Overview
Ezra & Gil is often a place that gets mentioned whenever ‘brunch’ and ‘Manchester’ are part of the same sentence. Located in the Northern Quarter area of Manchester City Centre, expect to meet a lively bustling atmosphere where waiting for a table is not uncommon (Please note: Ezra & Gil don’t take reservations).
Although popular with serving all day brunch, Ezra & Gil does offer a number of other dishes including a range of pokebowls and pasta dishes (12pm onwards). Of course, I can’t forget to mention their variety of artisanal coffees and teas that will really keep you spoiled for choice!
Whilst I’ve dined in a number of times, I decided to order a delivery on this particular occasion- the Ezra & Gil: Classic ‘E & G’ breakfast, their full English breakfast dish.
How does it look?
Honestly I was curious as to how the food would be served given it was the first time that I’d ordered as a takeaway. Upon arrival, it was clear from the sealed box that the food items were packaged together, rather than being individually boxed as some eateries are known to do with dishes (slight note: the brown paper bag was a Rocky Road which was very gooey, moist and delicious!).
Opening up the box showed the items all neatly packed up inside. For the dish, you’ll find:
- 2 x Cumberland sausages
- Free-range scrambled eggs
- 2 x roasted tomato halves
- Mushrooms pan-fried with garlic butter
- A small pot of baked beans
- 2 x slices of buttered sourdough toast.
How does it taste?
My initial impression was to expect the quality to inevitably drop a little, especially when you compare to being freshly served dining-in. So how did it fare?
Honestly, I have to say it was quite nice, at least, as a takeaway experience. The food was still quite warm when it arrived. However, I can see this will vary a lot depending on delivery times.
The sausages were quite juicy and flavourful and when eaten together with the sourdough toast, provided complementing flavour and texture profiles. It was clear the bread was of good quality as showcased by its crispy, chewy textures and mild sour taste. Furthermore, I thought just the right amount of butter was spread, which provided an additional layer of flavour.
However, I thought the scrambled eggs were somewhat of a letdown. Despite being buttery and tasty, I felt they were a bit overcooked as highlighted by their slightly hard, rubbery texture.
As for the remaining accompaniments, I couldn’t really find much fault with them:
- Mushrooms: Pan fried just right with a notable but not overpowering buttery garlic flavour.
- Tomatoes: Nice, firm slightly crisp skin and were very juicy.
- Baked beans: Just the right amount. Although quite saucy, it served well to complement the other items of the dish.
Would I recommend it?
Would I recommend it? Yes!
Putting aside the disadvantage when compared to dining in, Ezra & Gil: Classic ‘E & G’ breakfast serves well to be ordered as a takeaway option.
You can order takeaway through Deliveroo.
Alternatively, if you have the opportunity to eat-in and experience their full dine-in experience, you can find them on Hilton Street in the Northern Quarter.
Will you be eating from Ezra & Gil anytime soon?
