Peck & Yard: Pow Pow Stack Burger Review
Share this
What do Asian cuisine, Western cuisine and fast food all have in common? Fried chicken of course!
Well, in this case anyway.
Amongst the vast range of fried chicken options out there, I’d like to bring your attention to one particular place called Peck & Yard.

Overview
Based in Manchester, Peck & Yard is a Pan Asian fried chicken eatery which has eat-in and take out options. You’ll find all sorts of Asian centric food items such as gyozas and yakisoba noodles, alongside more standard fare options like fried rice and spring rolls.
Of course, the highlight of the menu is their fried chicken. You’ll really be spoilt for choice. From thighs to wings, they’re served up in a variety of ways that includes a range of buns, seasonings or on its own.
What caught my eye, however, was their Pow Pow Stack burger.
Please note: Peck & Yard has two locations. For this review, I ordered the meal to go from the Peck & Yard – Ancoats location.
How does it look?
Pow Pow Stack Burger
Ordering for take-out, you’ll find the burger packaged in the standard fare cardboard container.
While I imagine this is large enough for their other dishes, it’s a bit of a tight fit for this burger. This was evident upon opening the box, where I could clearly see the burger bun top being somewhat squashed.
A little disappointing but for me, it’s a somewhat minor one.
As for the burger itself, the Pow Pow Stack consists of the following:
- Double stacked fried chicken thigh and fillet
- Homemade ‘kimslaw’ (coleslaw with kimchi-style spices)
- ‘Kpop’ mayo (their homemade mildy spicy mayo)
- Plain white bun
Visually, I could see the fried chicken pieces were nice and thick, coated in a thin breaded layer. For my order, the burger was topped with a reasonable serving of kimslaw and mayo, which was nice to see.
It’s worth noting the kimslaw consists primarily of shredded carrots and cabbage, but no actual kimchi despite its suggestive name.
Marvelling at its size, the burger does feel colossally big! Of course, it’s nothing like those timed food challenges, but certainly big enough to grab your attention. If you have a big appetite, it’s an option that’s certainly worth considering.
Crazee Fries
Now, the burger can be ordered on its own, or as a meal with fries and a drink. The fries come with two options: Plain fries or their Crazee fries.
Crazee fries come with fries covered in one of their homemade sauces. There is a variety to choose from. For my order, I chose the Korean mayo fries – fries covered in homemade mayo made with some mild spices mixed in.
I have to say, the portion size is quite generous, especially since it’s a side dish within a meal! (at a little extra cost). For £3 when bought individually, I could easily treat it as a standalone meal that’s good value for money.
But of course, that’s based on the visual appearance alone. How did the Pow Pow Stack meal actually taste?
How does it taste?
Taking a bite (a little difficult I might add!), I immediately noticed the savouriness of the chicken coming out. The fried chicken’s crispiness gives way to the juicy, tender chicken meat inside.
The sweet, sour and mildly spicy flavours of the kimslaw come out to complement the savoury flavours of the chicken. I quite like how the kimslaw’s crunchiness complements the crispy and tender textures of the fried chicken. It certainly makes for an enjoyable eat!
What’s also nice was how the kimslaw flavours helped to reduce the heavy, ‘oily’ feeling of the fried chicken. I can’t imagine how I’d feel after eating if it wasn’t there! That being said, the fried chicken wasn’t overly oily, having just the right amount of oil in them.
The kpop mayo did add a slight, mild creaminess towards the overall flavour profile. However for me, it didn’t really add much, especially with the flavours of the kimslaw coming out to provide the main complementary flavour.
On the other hand, the Korean mayo sauce on the fries was certainly more noticeable. There’s a mild creamy flavour with a hint of sweet and sour at first. Whilst the subtle spiciness isn’t immediately noticeable, it slowly builds up to linger, tingling the tongue after a few mouthfuls of fries.
The fries themselves were also delicious! They were nice and crisp, its savouriness matching well with the Korean mayo, as well as the flavours of the burger.
Would I recommend it?
Would I recommend the Pow Pow Stack and Korean Mayo fries? Definitely!
Besides the somewhat squashed burger bun, I really couldn’t find any other fault with the meal. It was nothing short of delicious!
If you have a big appetite, I certainly recommend it. If you’re after a smaller-sized option, Peck & Yard also offer single-thigh and single-fillet burgers.
Don’t miss out and grab a Pow Pow Stack today!
