Overview
The KFC pizza combines some of the signature ingredients you can find from each respective restaurant. On the pizza, you’ll find the following:
- Pizza base – The pizza uses the classic Pizza Hut dough base but rather than using the standard tomato sauce, it’s replaced with KFC’s signature gravy sauce.
- Toppings – Mozzarella cheese and KFC’s very own Popcorn Chicken.
- Optional – You can choose between plain and garlic pizza crust and with/without sweetcorn.
On paper, this combination makes for a very savoury dish, which sounds appealing to the savoury food lovers such as myself!
But how does the KFC pizza actually look and taste in reality?
How does it look?
Seeing the different options available, I decided to order 2 large pizzas: one with plain crust and one with garlic crust (please note: the KFC pizza is only available in large size).
Visually, they look as you would probably imagine them to. You’ll find popcorn chicken dotted across the pizza over a bed of cheese. However, I could only really see the gravy sauce by looking more closely. The gravy’s duller golden brown colour is quite the contrast to the more visually distinctive red of the tomato sauce that normally populates the pizza base.
Interestingly, I was expecting the popcorn chicken to be served in halves rather than as whole pieces. Although the size certainly doesn’t pose any concern when it comes to eating, it might be something to consider in relation to enjoyment whilst eating.
For the garlic crust pizza that I ordered, I was a bit disappointed to see the quite uneven distribution of garlic seasoning on the crust. Some parts had barely any whilst others were heavily coated in it, which gives the impression it was just dumped on without much regard to detail.
How does it taste?
Without Sweetcorn
I have to say upon my first bite, I thought the taste was… well, weird. The combination of flavours certainly wasn’t what I had anticipated to say the least. I think this combination of flavours would take a little getting used to. And quite rightly so as the more I ate, the more I was enjoying eating the pizzas.
I immediately noticed the distinctive flavours of each ingredient, from the herbs and spices of the popcorn chicken to the gravy sauce. But collectively, this combination of flavours was quite unusual. I think the absence of tomato sauce base that’s typically used is quite apparent, where its sweet taste can provide a balance by complementing the salty flavours of the pizza toppings.
After trying both pizzas, I felt the garlic crust option added an extra layer of depth towards the flavour profile. The garlic ‘dustings’ seems reminiscent to garlic salt and is quite mild and subtle in flavour. I say subtle because it took a few mouthfuls to really notice its taste in the overall flavour.
With Sweetcorn
Lastly, let’s not forget about the sweetcorn. On a second occasion, I decided to order both crust options with sweetcorn. The sweetcorn does add a subtle sweetness towards the overall taste, but personally I thought it contrasted rather than complemented the other flavours.
Would I recommend it?
Would I recommend it? Yes I would!
Overall, I thought the KFC pizza was a rather interesting pizza, which becomes tastier and more enjoyable as you eat more of it.
Would you like to give it a try?
