McDonald’s Homestyle Crispy Chicken Review

When you hear the words ‘McDonald’s’, ‘chicken burger’ and ‘tasty’, what’s the first thing that you usually think of?
Would it be the McChicken Sandwich or the Chicken Legend? For me, it would be the McSpicy or the Buttermilk Crispy Chicken found in McDonald’s Hong Kong and Singapore respectively.
In short, I think the latter offerings are on another level, with patties that are more tender and juicier than their available UK counterparts.
But that’s all about to change with the new Homestyle Crispy Chicken burger.

Overview
Seeing McDonald’s latest offering, I immediately ordered one as soon as I could. With the order, you’ll find the burger has its own customised packaging as per usual for new, limited menu items.
Quick note: I like that the burger box lettering design is smaller and simpler. It’s a nice change compared to the larger fonts and graphic heavy designs that usually adorn McDonald’s menu item boxes.
With the burger itself, it’s described as consisting of the following:
- Crispy chicken breast fillet
- Hot and spicy mayo
- Caramelised onion compote
- Seasonal lettuce
- Bacon
- Red onions
- Slice of cheddar cheese
All served in a glazed poppy and sesame seed bun.
But how does it actually look?
How does it look?
Honestly, I was a little tentative to see how well the burger was prepared visually. It’s not uncommon to find your order looking like it’s just travelled through a hurricane. Thankfully, I avoided the storm this time around.
Inside, there’re the standard fare bacon rashers, cheese and a well-balanced amount of red onions and lettuce.
But of course, the highlight here is the chicken breast fillet. It was reasonably large and managed to easily cover all of the space within the burger bun itself. Finally, McDonald’s UK has its own large chicken patty offering!
It certainly beats Chicken Select pieces, which is something McDonald’s has been using for a number of its past limited edition chicken burger offerings e.g. Chicken Big Tasty.
My only real gripe was with the mayo and onion compote, which wasn’t spread particularly evenly. No doubt a number of bites will be devoid of the sauce flavours and textures.
Of course, appearances are only part of the equation. How did it actually taste?
How does it taste?
In short, it was delightful!
The crispy chicken breast fillet was quite succulent with a nice crispy outer layer to complement it. It was well seasoned and full of flavour, kind of like a juicier and larger version of the Chicken Select.
For me, this breast fillet certainly beats out the drier Chicken Legend and the smaller, thinly battered McChicken Sandwich patties.
On top of the chicken’s savouriness, the mild creaminess of the hot and spicy mayo added an extra layer of depth towards the flavour. However, I could barely notice the spiciness.
What was noticeable was the sweetness from the caramelised onion compote, which wasn’t overly sweet. With the chicken, this provided a nice balance to give complementary sweet and savoury tones within the overall flavour profile.
Despite there being a couple of pieces of bacon, I didn’t feel like it added anything towards the burger besides its texture. But then again, the burger is already packed full of flavour.
Would I recommend it?
Would I recommend it? Definitely!
Overall, the McDonald’s Homestyle Crispy Chicken is a welcoming entry. It’s just a shame it won’t be sticking around for long. I genuinely think it’s much better than their current permanent chicken burger range.
Although the burger itself won’t be around permanently, chances are we could expect to see its patty being used for other upcoming burgers that McDonald’s decides to release. After all, that’s really the standout highlight here.
Will you be picking up one whilst it’s around?
