Overview
I actually stumbled across these during a grocery trip to Oseyo, a Korean retailer chain across the UK. Seeing the chips stocked on the shelves, curiosity got the best of me and I just had to buy a packet for myself.
But how did it look and taste?
How does it look?
Opening up the packet, I was immediately met with a very potent but welcoming smell of garlic bread. I can honestly say it was very authentic! It’s the exact same smell as the garlic bread you can buy in shops. So far so good.
Looking at each individual chip, I was instantly reminded of Walker’s Sunbites range of crisps. Both products are multigrain snacks and bear the same square shaped ‘ridged’ design. It shouldn’t come as a surprise really given that both Frito-Lays (producers of Sun Chips) and Walkers are both owned by PepsiCo.
Based on the smell alone, so far so good. But the smell is only part of the equation. How did it actually taste?
How does it taste?
Upon eating, I immediately noticed the distinctive garlic flavour, which is quite potent and flavourful. It’s accompanied with a notable creamy, buttery taste. However, it’s also a bit sweet which I found to be rather disappointing.
I imagine the sweetness is down to tailoring the product towards the Korean consumer, whose version of garlic bread is much sweeter when compared to its counterparts in other countries such as the UK.
Texture-wise, they’re quite coarse and a little thick layered that gives them some bite to the crunch. Additionally they don’t feel too oily either, which doesn’t make it feel as heavy to eat compared to a number of more oily crisp brands out there.
Would I recommend it?
Would I recommend it? I would say give it a try at least. If your food preferences are more towards the sweeter side, chances are it would be more to your liking.
Overall, I would say Sun Chips garlic baguette flavour is ok. Without the sweetness, I would have thought it would be a great snack.
